Week 10

We have to do a second EKG, really? My head was spinning as I tried to stay calm, I didn’t want my 4 year old son to have to go through any of this. We had just spent the last hour since the first EKG using alcohol pads to get the sticky leads off. His skin is so sensitive to sticky stuff like that and band aids. They seem to stick to him twice as hard as anyone else. The two men walk back in with the rolling machine, sticking the stickiest things all over him again.
***
The emergency room #6 was plain. They need to have at least one or two painted and decorated for kids. It’s intimidating enough to feel so bad. It amazed me that being only 4 years old he felt bad enough to ask me to be taken to the emergency room. What was going on with him was he going to be ok?
***
His face looked pale to me. My mother said I was over reacting. That was her way to try to get me to feel better. All it did was make me irritated at her. He was short of breath. You could see the struggling look on his face. He looked scared and uncomfortable.
***
“Andrew, are you ok?” I asked
“No mama I can’t get a deep breath.” He said
“You can’t breathe very good?” I asked trying to make sure that was what he meant
“Well I can breathe mama I just can’t get it deep. Something’s not right mama you need to take me to the doctors.”
I could see how upset and uncomfortable he was. I got him in the car and headed for the hospital. I called my husband to see if he could leave work and meet me there, he was too busy to do so. I then called my mom to see if she could help out with Anna.

  1. I'm not sure that the last vignette flashback adds anything here--might have worked as well to keep it all chronological, but, overall, you do nicely with those quick snapshots.
